Why Deadwood Removal is so Important

The presence of deadwood in the tree’s crown is a consequence of the natural process of ageing. Dead branches occurring in trees forming private woodlands should generally be left as they will be beneficial to flora and fauna.

However, in areas which are likely to be used by the general public the presence of deadwood in a tree is a concern and should be dealt with promptly to reduce the risk of branches snapping off, possibly resulting in someone being injured or property damaged.

What does a crown reduction involve

Crown lifting involves the removal of lower branches in order to increase the amount of clearance between the lower canopy of the tree and the ground.

Crown lifting is usually undertaken when the passage of pedestrians or vehicles has become impeded and can help increase the amount of light penetrating onto a shaded garden.

It is recommended that when such tree management works are carried out 85% of the live crown is retained.

Crown thinning involves the selective removal of live branches from the tree’s crown with the aim of producing an evenly spaced and balanced branch structure.

It is rarely undertaken on broadleaved evergreens and conifers.

Crown thinning is carried out to increase the amount of light penetrating through to buildings and gardens which may otherwise have become shaded through the presence of the tree.

The technique can also be used to reduce the risk of wind damage occurring through the ‘sail effect’ that can occur when a tree has dense branches and leaves.

A Crown reduction is a pruning operation which is undertaken with the aim of reducing the overall height and width of the tree’s canopy.

Crown reductions may have to be undertaken when a tree is in failing health and the canopy starts to die back and becomes ‘stag headed’, that’s to say dead branches have started to protrude through the receding living canopy thereby resembling the antlers of a stag.

Crown reductions should not be used as a way of improving the penetration of light to gardens and buildings – for such shading problems Crown thinning and Crown lifting would usually produce better, longer-lasting results.

What is Pollarding?

Pollarding is a pruning technique which is undertaken on some tree species so as to encourage the formation of numerous branches from either the same point on the main stem or principal branches.

Once pollarding has been carried out then the process will need to be repeated every 1-5 years depending on the situation.

They took down two trees, ivy which was all up the house, and did general pruning on the rest of our trees. Our garden is tiered up a hill and this was no problem for them. Contracted Ascent Tree Solutions to strip 2 Hawthorn trees covered (and smothered) in invasive ivy, to reduce and shape them and to reduce and shape an Elder tree. The 3 staff who arrived were polite, efficient, friendly and wasted no time in getting the job done. The quotation was more than fair and far less than I expected. I cannot recommend this company enough  and would definitely use them again.

     Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We contacted ascent tree solutions for a job that required a specialist service for removing an overgrown Hawthorne tree. Freya and Doug relished the challenge and took the tree down with ease and made a super job of the surrounding area. They even ground the stumps and left me a message if some more is found just call them and they will pop over and grind that as well for us. There timings could not have been any better removing the tree(s) and their prices are very reasonable for the work they undertake. Give Freya and Doug a try. You will not regret that decision. These guys are super in what they do and they are very professional polite and above all are very dependable as we had been let down in the past. We would recommend these guys to anyone they are a great team and a pleasure to have doing your work. They even cut the tree into manageable size logs so we could give back to the community for potentially log burners which I am happy to report an elderly couple collected and was great full for the logs
