Stump Grinding FAQ

The cost depends on the size of stump and whether the customer is looking for it to be reduced to 6” (150mm) below the final restoration level, as might be required if the area is being levelled and seeded to grass, or if the stump and its root system needs to be completely removed as might be done ahead of a building development.

Given the range of stump grinders that we are able employ we are able to offer a cost effective service. One of our stump grinders is the same width as a wheelie bin, making it ideal for difficult-to-access gardens where manual labour would be the only alternative.

This depends on the size of the stump and the requirements of the customer. We employ a range of different size stump grinders so you may be assured that the time taken to undertake the work is kept to a minimum.

There are a few reasons why you might want to grind out a stump, the main one is that it removes an unsightly obstacle and results in a lawn area which easier to maintain.

Some species of tree such as willow are quite capable of growing back, even from a stump that has been heavily reduced. We are happy to advise you on the best solution to avoid this happening.

Restoration

If the area is to be restored to grass by applying seed or laying turf then we recommend that the stump is reduced to 6″ (150mm) below final ground level and that all wood chip is removed and replaced with clean topsoil.  The presence of decomposing wood chip within the soil can result in nitrogen depletion which may well have a negative impact on the growth of lawns and flower beds.
