As qualified Arborists, we can advise you on what pruning is appropriate for your trees. We believe that pruning should always be approached positively and we will take time to discuss what is proposed so that we understand the reasons for undertaking the tree management works.
We are experienced in undertaking such Formative pruning along with Renovative pruning where the aim is to cut back all the stems of mature trees and shrubs to near ground level in order to stimulate new growth and revitalise the plant.

The Benefits Of Tree Pruning
Trees and shrubs are grown for various reasons, in many cases, it is for aesthetic reasons – their flowers and berries, colourful leaves and stems. When pruned correctly the tree or shrub will direct its energy into producing vigorous re-growth which will enhance its appearance.
Nearly all young woody plants benefit from pruning in their early years. The aim is to establish a good habit. Conifers are generally planted without pruning.
Pruning of trees can come in a variety of forms, we always work to BS 3998: 2010 Tree Work – Recommendations and so will assess your tree to advise on the best option, this may include;
Pruning Styles
- Crown Lifting – The lower branches of the tree are removed to allow for more space underneath, particularly helpful on trees overhanging driveways or communal spaces.
- Crown Thinning – This is where branches are removed from within the tree’s canopy, usually ranging from 10-25% of the tree’s overall crown volume. If a tree is causing excessive shading, this may be the option for you.
- Crown reduction – An overall reduction in the size of the tree’s canopy. This is usually for trees which are growing within a confined space or where a tree needs to be managed at a certain size.

The main reasons for pruning trees and shrubs are
- To keep trees and shrubs healthy and productive – dead stems should be removed along with weak, damaged or diseased stems.
- To help regenerate plants that have become neglected and have outgrown their allocated space.
- To encourage flowers to develop, this is particularly so with fruit trees.
- To create a standard tree in order to show off a tree with beautiful bark.
- To restrict the size of the tree or shrub. Some species respond particularly well to this treatment and can be cut into precise shapes.
Not all trees respond to pruning in the same way, you must also consider the time of year and other factors such as nesting birds. But don’t worry, our helpful and friendly team can provide all the information you need.

This depends on a range of factors including the size, species and location of the tree. We find it works best if we do a site visit, discuss the proposed works and then provide a written quotation.
This depends on a number of factors but foremost is the species of tree. As a general rule Autumn and Winter are good times to carry out work on trees with spring and summer less so. We are happy to advise customers on all aspects of tree work.
The simple answer is ‘yes’ but care would be needed not to affect the stability and long term health of the tree. Permission to carry out tree works from the owner of the tree should be first obtained. Any tree branches removed would need to be returned to the Council as they would be remain their property.
If the tree is owned by a neighbour then we would advise that the matter be discussed with them and an agreement reached about how the tree works might be undertaken. Whilst in law a person is able to remove branches overhanging the property boundary care would need to ensure that in doing so the stability and long term health of the tree isn’t being affected.
Tree trimming is a pruning operation more appropriately applied to the maintenance of hedgerows. Pruning is a general term used to describe a range of techniques which can be used to manage trees for a variety of reasons.

Nesting Birds
Before commencing any work on hedges (and trees) a check will be made for nesting birds. The main bird nesting season is generally regarded as being between March and August, although some birds do nest outside this period.
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 provides protection to nesting birds, their chicks and eggs.
