Alder Trees Reduced – Tansley, Derbyshire

Alder Tree being pruned

The Alder tree, (Alnus glutinosa) is native to the UK and commonly grows alongside rivers and lakes; the roots can survive waterlogging. In its early years, the tree can grow as much as 2m each season and for this reason, it can be a useful tree to plant as a screen on the edge of a property.

Ascent Tree Solutions have recently been called on by a homeowner at Tansley in the Amber Valley, near Matlock, to advise him about a row of mature Alder trees that grow alongside a stream on the edge of his property.

Alder Trees – Survey

In this case, the Alders were growing at a rented property in a location that is close to several neighbouring properties. Our client was keen to recognise his responsibilities and followed our recommendations that a tree condition survey should be undertaken by a qualified arborist.

The tree condition survey involved closely inspecting the trees to identify tree health issues and structural defects.

Following the survey, a report was written which concluded that the Alders were in a fair condition and that importantly no significant problems were identified which could be mitigated, in the short term, by undertaking a light pruning of the canopy.

Interestingly the report found no evidence that the Alders were infected with Alder dieback disease (Phytophthora alni) which is widespread throughout this country. Arguably this supports the case for making the effort to ensure the trees continue to be healthy as they may have a degree of natural resistance to the disease.

Alder Tree Pruning in the Amber Valley

Ascent Tree Solutions arborists pruning Alder trees.

Our client was happy for Ascent Tree Solutions to follow the recommendations of the report, so a few weeks ago two of our skilled tree services team climbed each tree and carefully selected and removed various branches, reducing the volume of wood in the canopy and thereby ensuring that in the long-term the trees remained stable and safe.

We are very satisfied with the finished appearance of the Alders which form a significant feature within Tansley village. Our client was also very pleased with the tree works, which will ensure the trees remain in a safe condition for some years to come. We will continue to monitor the trees and a further detailed tree survey will need to be undertaken within the next five years.
