Felling Dangerous Trees
Our team of experienced tree surgeons were recently employed by a Matlock Bath landowner to remove a row of Ash trees that had become infected by Ash die-back disease and had been identified by the County Council’s tree officer as posing a danger to users of the footpath and road.
Ascent Tree Solutions are very experienced in safely felling dangerous Ash trees. When trees are affected by ash dieback they are especially dangerous because they become unstable and weak and are prone to shedding branches or falling over without warning.
Whilst all our tree surgeons are highly trained and very experienced, we are always extra careful when working on diseased Ash trees as in their weakened state they can be very unpredictable. On this occasion, whilst the dangerous trees couldn’t be climbed, we were able to use our specialist land-rover cherry picker to safely dismantle the trees in sections.
Once on the ground, some of the smaller pieces of wood were chipped and removed back to our base at Tansley, where they will eventually be burnt as biomass. With the landowner’s agreement, most of the Ash logs were left on site as a ‘habitat pile’ which will benefit local wildlife.
Ash Dieback Creates Dangerous Trees
Ash dieback disease is continuing to spread throughout Derbyshire, particularly around Matlock and Matlock Bath where many Ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior) are found growing on the rocky limestone hillsides. Ash dieback is caused by a fungal infection called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. This fungal disease originated in Southern Asia and is now widespread across Europe including almost every part of the UK. For many Ash trees once they become infected then they will soon weaken and may also succumb to other diseases such as Honey fungus (Armillaria sp).
