Re-Pollarding A Horse Chestnut in Chesterfield – Doug Porter.

We were recently called out to inspect a Horse Chestnut Tree and some Lime trees. The Conker Tree (Horse Chestnut) that which was suffering from Bleeding Canker.
Bleeding canker is a disease that affects European horse chestnut trees and the issues seem to be restricted to Great Britain. It can be identified by the appearance of ‘bleeding cankers’, or lesions, on the stems (trunks) and branches. These cankers ooze or bleed dark fluid. In most cases diagnosed since the year 2000, the cause has been a type of bacteria known as Pseudomonas syringae pathovar aesculi.
It can kill affected trees, although some do recover from infection, and some appear to be resistant to it.
Horse Chestnut Tree Pollarded
This tree was not too badly affected and the only Horse chestnut in the area. So we took the decision to prune the tree.
Pollarding is a way of pruning trees involving the removal of the upper branches of a tree, which promotes the growth of a dense head of foliage and branches.
In cases where there are lots of Horse Chestnuts, it’s best to start with the least infected trees first. If you have lots of Horse chestnuts with Cankers you will require a survey to be carried out by a registered tree professional.
